- FADE FROM BLACK
-
- INT. ELEVATOR SHAFT - DAY
-
- CLOSE ON SIGN
-
- A flashlight beam rests for a moment on a sign, "PARKILL--
- ELEC 20," then moves on.
-
- IN THE SHAFT
-
- Two men scale the dark shaft, illuminated only by their head-
- mounted lights. Their climbing gear CLINKS, sending
- reverberations through the metallic chamber.
-
- In the course of his B.S. and M.B.A., all JOHN ASHLEY really
- learned was climbing. Finally, he's applying his education.
- He clips a carabiner to the exposed steel framing.
-
- JOHN
- I never thought climbing the corporate
- ladder would be so literal.
-
- Supported by a safety tether, CLAY CAMPBELL brings up the
- rear. In four years, all Clay learned was how to play with
- computers. Lucky for him, there's money in computers--just
- not enough. He rests for a moment on the 22nd floor.
-
- CLAY
- Next time, we take the elevator.
-
- Clay starts up again.
-
- AT LEVEL 25
-
- They stop to consult a diagram.
-
- INT. NARROW PASSAGEWAY - DAY
-
- They scrape past exposed dry wall, following a web of wire
- conduits to the source.
-
- INT. CRAWLSPACE UNDER THE COMPUTER ROOM - DAY
-
- Now on their stomachs, Clay and John crawl toward the
- camera, then stop. John pulls out a cellular phone and
- dials.
-
- INT. COMPUTER ROOM - DAY
-
- In the room above, a massive mainframe computer rest on a
- floor of wide, white tiles. A phone RINGS in the next room.
- The company's computer TECHNICIAN, a homely spod, leaves his
- terminal. The door closes behind him.
-
- CRAWLSPACE UNDER THE COMPUTER ROOM
-
- JOHN
- (into cellular phone)
- Hello, who's this?
-
- INT. COMPUTER ROOM - DAY
-
- A tile pops open and John's dust-covered head pops up--phone
- to his ear.
-
- Hi Byron, you're just the man I need.
-
- They carefully crawl out.
-
- My name's Chester Wilkins from Who's Who
- of Southern California.
-
- Clay quietly slips over to the terminal. John stands look-
- out; he watches the Technician (Byron) through the plane
- glass window as he talks with him on the phone.
-
- Sure you do. I'm happy to tell you that
- you've been nominated for our next
- directory!
-
- Clay, referring to a piece of paper, rushes through a series
- of menus and screens, until he finds what he wants.
-
- CLAY
- (whispers)
- Shit! He logged out. I need his
- password.
-
- JOHN
- (into phone)
- Byron, I need to ask you some questions
- for our new Personal Touch section. Do
- you have a nickname?
-
- John puts the phone to Clay's ear. Clay types "Fuzzy" as a
- password. No go.
-
- Do you have any pets?...What's its name?
-
- Phone to his ear, Clay types: "Sparks" as a password. No
- go.
-
- Alright. Did you have a dog as a child?
-
- Clay listens and types: "Muffin." Jackpot! Clay races
- through more screens and types some commands.
-
- You must miss Muffin a lot.
- (beat)
- Finally, could you give me a biography
- of your life, starting with your
- childhood.
-
- John watches as the Technician starts into his life story.
-
- CLAY
- Done! The astute financiers here at
- Parkill just purchased 2 million shares
- of your sorry-ass start-up.
-
- JOHN
- (smiles/nods to Clay; into phone)
- Uh, huh.
-
- CLAY
- ...I just need to clean up a couple
- things.
-
- John through the opening in the floor and holds open the
- floor panel for Clay.
-
- JOHN
- (to Clay)
- Come on!
- (to phone, off Byron's response)
- No, no, Byron. Don't rush.
-
- IN THE NEXT ROOM
-
- A serious suit (Agent Ellis) rushes in. He mutters
- something to the Technician then continues into the computer
- room.
-
- INT. COMPUTER ROOM - DAY
-
- ELLIS
- Stop!
-
- Just as the agent turns the corner of the mainframe, Clay
- slides across the floor and into the open hole. John drops
- the tile into place--impossible to lift with bare hands.
-
- INT. UNDER COMPUTER ROOM - DAY
-
- On their bellies, the two scurry away as fast as possible.
-
- INT. COMPUTER ROOM - DAY
-
- Up above, the Technician uses a suction cup device to pull
- up the floor tiles. Ellis almost grabs the intruders.
-
- INT. ELEVATOR SHAFT - DAY
-
- John and Clay fly out of the passageway into the dark shaft.
- They grab the ropes and start rappelling down.
-
- Just as they pass the 20th floor, two hands force open the
- elevator doors. Agent Ellis comes to the edge and aims his
- gun at the descending figures.
-
- John and Clay turn off their lights. Now invisible in the
- dark, they keep going down. The rectangle of light shrinks
- away above them as they rappel. Giving up, the agent steps
- away from the ledge and lets the doors close.
-
- Ten floors below, another rectangle of light appears,
- framing the face of another agent (Agent Cho), who stands
- below the open emergency hatch of the elevator compartment.
-
- Clay and John slow to a stop.
-
- JOHN
- Shit!
-
- After a few moments, the elevator GROANS and starts to rise.
- Cho's illuminated face lifts toward the climbers.
-
- John swings to the side of the shaft and grabs one of
- elevator doors. He manually spreads the doors with a
- screwdriver and climbs out. Clay swings over; John pulls
- him through the opening.
-
- INT. ELEVATOR LOBBY - DAY
-
- Dismayed OFFICE WORKERS watch the dust-covered pair crawl
- out of the shaft. John and Clay run out, looking for the
- stairs.
-
- INT. CORRIDOR OF CUBICLES - NEAR STAIRS - DAY
-
- John and Clay run down the corridor, through a door, into...
-
- INT. STAIRWELL - DAY
-
- They fly down two flights. At one landing, John lands HARD
- on his ankle. AHH! He crumbles to the floor.
-
- A DOOR OPENS above and Ellis pops his head down the
- stairwell; he pursues.
-
- Clay picks up John and helps him limp through a door.
-
- INT. CORRIDOR OF CUBICLES - NEAR STAIRS - DAY
-
- an
- and props a nearby coat stand between the stairwell door and
- an office divider.
-
- INT. CORRIDOR OF CUBICLES - DAY
-
- John tries to trot along with Clay, but the pain is too
- much. Clay steals a mail cart from a passing MAILROOM
- WORKER.
-
- INT. CORRIDOR OF CUBICLES - NEAR STAIRS - DAY
-
- Ellis and Cho bust through the blockade and scan for the
- fugitives.
-
- INT. CORRIDOR OF CUBICLES - DAY
-
- Clay pushes John, riding in the mail cart, through the maze
- of short-walled corridors at a break-neck speed.
-
- CLAY
- Express delivery!
-
- Workers clear out of the way, stunned.
-
- Agents Ellis and Cho close in.
-
- INT. OUTSIDE JACK COLE'S OFFICE - DAY
-
- From her desk, a SECRETARY (Diane) watches the approach the
- disaster on wheels.
-
- Ellis catches Clay, grabbing his arms.
-
- John and the cart turn, whizzing into an open office.
-
- Ellis tackles Clay on the Secretary's desk, sending her
- papers flying. Ellis holds Clay bent over the desk. The
- Secretary stares at the odd sight and gives Clay a strained
- smile.
-
- CLAY
- (to Diane)
- Excuse us.
-
- INT. JACK COLE'S OFFICE - DAY
-
- John and the cart slows and bumps into the desk. Jack Cole
- looks up from the papers on his desk to gaze at the strange
- delivery, holding his ankle in pain.
-
- CUT TO:
-
- INT. CEO'S OFFICE - DAY
-
- Flanked by the Technician and the company's soon-retiring
- SECURITY GUARD, Clay and John describe their ploy.
-
- CLAY
- John here has a start-up software
- company that needed investors.
-
- JOHN
- But no one would meet with me. So I
- resorted to "adventure capital."
-
- SHARON RANDALL, the investment company's 60-year-old CEO,
- listens while turned away, looking out at the Los Angeles
- skyline. One of a only women to reach the corner office,
- she has mellowed during her contentious career, whereas,
- JACK COLE, 25 years her junior, may never be satisfied. The
- 35-year-old broker stands by like a court advisor.
-
- SHARON
- You've put me in a difficult position.
- This company has big, sensitive clients
- who don't like investigations...and
- publicity...
-
- DIANE GRIFFIN, the under-appreciated, over-qualified
- assistant to Jack Cole, steps in.
-
- DIANE
- Jack.
-
- Jack signals for her to approach. Diane hands him a note.
- Clay's eyes follow her as she leaves.
-
- Jack approaches the CEO and signals for a huddle.
-
- JACK
- (whispering to Sharon)
- Since our order, the stock has rallied
- to 24. Everyone seems to think we know
- something.
-
- SHARON
- For once your reputation has helped.
-
- JACK
- I see an opportunity.
-
- CLOSE ON CLAY AND JOHN
-
- They nervously await the verdict.
-
- Across the room, the CEO listens to Jack's scheme, eyeing
- the intruders.
-
- SHARON
- That's crazy!
-
- Jack lobbies hard. After a few more moments, the CEO
- agrees, and approaches the intruders.
-
- (to Security Guard and Technician)
- I really see no other choice.
- (to Clay and John)
- The FBI wants me to press charges,...
- (approaches the twosome)
- but what they don't know is...you work
- for me.
-
- Clay and John look at one another, confused.
-
- (to John)
- Keep the company.
-
- Sharon takes the company ID card from the lapel of the
- Technician.
-
- Byron, you're fired.
- (clips the ID on Clay)
- Mr. Campbell, don't let this happen
- again.
-
- Clay is stunned.
-
-
- ONE YEAR LATER...
-
-
- CUT TO:
-
- EXT. PARKILL BUILDING - MORNING
-
- TILT DOWN FROM LOW ANGLE SHOT OF THE PARKILL TOWER TO...
-
- CLOSE ON CORNERSTONE SIGN
-
- "PARKILL" is etched into the reflective, metal plaque in
- which Clay, decked out in an suit, checks his hair. He
- clips his ID tag to his lapel and hurries off.
-
- CUT TO:
-
- EXT. PARKILL BUILDING LOADING DOCK - MORNING
-
- Clay enters through the loading dock where a grocery cart
- full of blankets, bags and paper rests in front of a
- dumpster. He props his leg on the dumpster to tie his shoe.
-
- Inside, a HOMELESS WOMAN hunts through papers, muttering to
- herself. Sensing a presence, she jerks around. Covered in
- torn clothes, the woman can be no more than twenty-years-
- old.
-
- HOMELESS WOMAN
- Spare some change for breakfast?
-
- Clay hands her a couple coins. As he rushes away into the
- service entrance of the building, the woman flips out of the
- dumpster, lands on a beat-up pair of roller blades, and
- skates away with the grocery cart.
-
- CUT TO:
-
- INT. PARKILL LOBBY - MORNING
-
- Clay slides his ID tag through a reader and waves hello to
- the Security Guard. The gate opens and Clay passes through.
-
- INT. PARKILL HALLS - MORNING
-
- Clay strolls down the hall, exchanging greetings with his
- now familiar co-workers.
-
- INT. PARKILL OFFICE CORRIDOR - MORNING
-
- Clay steps through a door, into an office of cubicles,
- buzzing with noise: phones, typing, faxes. Diane, Jack's
- secretary, rushes up to Clay. A telephone headset rides on
- her ear and its wire dangles like a tail.
-
- DIANE
- Clay! There you are.
- (beat)
- The network is freaked and the phones
- are calling Hong Kong again.
- (intimate whisper)
- I missed you last night.
-
- Clay looks up; the overhead fluorescents turn on and off at
- random. Diane checks both ways then sneaks a kiss on his
- cheek.
- CLAY
- (looking curiously at the lights)
- I crashed at my place.
- (turning to Diane)
- See if the accounting system has printed
- any strange checks.
-
- DIANE
- Right...Jack wants to see you.
-
- CUT TO:
-
- INT. JACK'S OFFICE - MORNING
-
- Clay cautiously cracks the door and watches the executive.
-
- Jack steps over to the new computer system next to his desk,
- sizing it up. Jack cautiously touches a key on the
- computer's keyboard. The machine BEEPS at him.
-
- JACK
- (into phone; unaware of Clay)
- Wait a second! You left the meeting
- early, to go to the bathroom, and while
- you're gone, they changed their minds!
- No merger!
-
- Jack tries another button; paper pours out of the laser
- printer. He frantically scrambles to stop it.
-
- Nature called and I lost 200 thou! I'll
- sue the bitch!
-
- Jack pulls his trashcan/shredder under the paper flow; it
- devours the sheets efficiently, but the noise is deafening.
-
- (loud)
- Sam. Sam. Just be right on Vortech.
-
- Frustrated, he slams down the handset.
-
- Diane! Where's the geek!
-
- Jack turns around; sees Clay at the door.
-
- What's going on around here?!
-
- Clay walks to the printer and pulls the plug on the machine;
- it stops.
-
- CLAY
- Some hot-shot hacker's been snooping
- around our computers.
-
- JACK
- Jesus, Clay! You're suppose to prevent
- that!
-
- Clay begins installing the box-shaped device (modem) he
- carried in. He pulls a small screwdriver out of his waist
- pack, steps behind the computer, and tinkers.
-
- Don't sweat it, Jack. I've restricted
- his access and set a trap. I stashed a
- bogus form letter on the system offering
- oodles of cool specs to anyone who sends
- in $10 and a self-addressed stamped
- envelop to one Betty Atkins...a.k.a. me.
-
- JACK
- Just promise me Sharon won't find out
- about this mess.
-
- CLAY
- Of course.
-
- JACK
- (referring to the box)
- What's that?
-
- CLAY
- A modem...lets you talk to other
- computers.
-
- Jack ignores Clay; he reviews contracts on his desk.
-
- JACK
- (sarcastic)
- What a fascinating conversation that
- would be. Computers are so useful.
-
- Clay steps out from behind the computer.
-
- CLAY
- Should I remove it?!
-
- COLE
- Ah, no. It looks good there.
-
- CLAY
- Can I show you how to use it?
-
- COLE
- Nah, I know. Point and click, push and
- pull--an idiot can learn.
- (turning to Clay)
- I typed something in yesterday.
- (turning away)
- Of course, the machine lost it.
-
- Clay takes the controls of the computer--ready to help find
- the document.
-
- CLAY
- What did you call it?
-
- COLE
- I don't know.
-
- CLAY
- Do you know where you put it?
-
- COLE
- No.
-
- CLAY
- Then it's probably lost.
-
- COLE
- (judgmental)
- Really.
- (into intercom)
- Diane, I think I found something more
- useless than you!
- (chuckles)
-
- CUT TO:
-
- INT. OUTSIDE COLE'S OFFICE - DAY
-
- Clay stands next to Diane who sorts memos at her desk.
-
- DIANE
- Ungrateful bastard. I do everything
- around here! That man needs a dose of
- humility.
-
- CLAY
- I'll see what I can do.
-
- Suddenly, there is a BEEPING. Clay looks to his waist and
- turns off his beeper.
-
- That's Hunter--must have just logged on.
- (rushing out)
- Call me when Jack's leaving.
-
- CUT TO:
-
